What is the Grand National?

It may not be the oldest horse race in the world but the Grand National can lay claim to being the most famous. It is regarded by jockeys, owners and trainers as being the most testing of all the National Hunt Races, with four miles and 514 yards ahead of all the runners and riders.

Not only is this an extremely long race, it is fiendishly testing in terms of the jumps with the Grand National course at Aintree featuring some notorious obstacles such as the Chair and Becher’s Brook.

The National, like no other sporting event, brings together all members of the betting community so whether you are a serious punter, someone who likes an occasional flutter or even if you place one wager every year, chances are it will be a Grand National Bet.

When is the Grand National?

The obvious question to ask if you’re looking to take a punt on this race is when is the Grand National set to take place? It’s an annual event, held on the Aintree course in Liverpool and it goes off in April, either on the first or second Saturday of the month.

You can check Unibet’s Grand National betting markets if you are unsure and these will start to build some months ahead of the race itself. But, in general, you should be checking your racing calendars every April.

Grand National Betting

If you’re planning on taking a Grand National bet then all of the usual staking option will be available. You can therefore bet on the outright winner and also on the Each Way placings which, will usually extend past the usual four places as part of a special Grand National promotion.

In play betting is also possible for this event and in a race with so many twists, turns and fallers, the Grand National is perfect for a live bet.

First run in the 1830’s we’ve seen so many highlights from the Grand National over the decades. Red Rum’s historic treble in the 1970’s is legendary and then we had the emotional win of Bob Champion on Aldaniti in the early 1980’s. It’s no wonder that so many members of the betting community and the general public want to get involved in the Grand National betting.

It can potentially land some very big wins too. Winning odds of 50/1 or higher are not uncommon and as recently as 2009, the rank outsider Mon Mome came in at a staggering 100/1.

In short, the Grand National combines the best of everything: It’s a historic race and one that will almost always produce a story involving jockey, horse, trainer or owner that will work its way into National Folklore.

Potentially, there are some high prices to be had and the Grand National betting markets at Unibet are among the most active on our sportsbooks so, look out for this race in April each year and consider your options for placing your own Grand National bet.
